ArtistsTashika McLeodPainting is my mirror, my yellow brick road, my tool of instruction. Drawing started it. From the beginning the act of creating line on paper, then later using those lines to say something worthwhile is my passion. Painting fills me with a sense of accomplishment and integrity, and has proven a most amenable vehicle for translating inner vision to outer reality. I paint with everything I have inside. Though I paint deliberately, consciously employing all of my learned techniques, my unconscious is the director of operations. The subject matter, colors, and expressive way in which I paint each piece tells a story of life in the Caribbean. I try to evoke the hidden beauty of the land, life and culture in everything I create. I was born and raised in Guyana. As a result, I am driven to tell the story of life there as I experienced it. I am the man behind the curtain, the inspiration behind the art, the talent to bring the vision to reality. I am a Brooklyn native, but I have lived all over the world because my parents were in the army. It wasn’t until I came to live in Hawaii many years ago that the graffiti skills I learned in Brooklyn would show me my destiny. At the age of ten I knew I wanted to be an artist. I would observe my cousin as he created magic with a spray can as well as my brother who was becoming a mighty wordsmith. The combination of the two drew me into the Hip Hop movement. Being involved in the movement as I was, I quickly came to the realization that the definition of Hip Hop was far from one-dimensional. I learned that it had many ingredients and that one day I would create a recipe for it that the world would crave. I love drawing and creating on fabric using a non-traditional approach. Being a fan of Hip Hop I am driven to infuse it in my work. I attended Georgia State University where I earned a Bachelor’s in Textiles. I love working with Textiles and find it a rewarding medium in which to create my Hip Hop recipe. |
